Heute begann mein Tag sehr früh: Um 5:30 Uhr ging mein Wecker und eine Stunde später sassen Praveen und ich im Taxi zum Flughafen... er hatte für mich seinen Freund Madhavan eine Stunde vor dessen Arbeitsbeginn organisiert, dieser arbeitet im Ebixcash Worldmoney am Flughafen Chennai. Schweren Herzens verabschiedete ich mich von Praveen - er ist der beste Freund, den man sich vorstellen kann und er wird mir sehr fehlen!
Wie ich bereits erwähnt habe, ist die Beschaffung von Bargeld ein kompliziertes Unterfangen hier in Indien... Am besten nimmt man viel Bargeld (EUR, GBP, USD oder CHF) mit und wechselt mit einer Kommission von 2 - 3%, aber am günstigsten sind Banktransfers (dazu benötigt man jedoch eine internationale IBAN Nummer). Es hat zwar Geldautomaten, man kann jedoch nur max. 10'000 Rupien (CHF/EUR 150) beziehen und das mit Kommissionen beider Banken (ca. 6% mit EC/maestro, etliches mehr mit der Kreditkarte!). Bei Bezahlung mit Kreditkarte fallen die meisten Gebühren an... Bei Madhavan konnte ich mit meiner EC Karte einen grösseren Betrag beziehen (5% Kommission + einmalige Gebühr von CHF 5 meiner Bank) - nun hoffe ich, dass ich vorläufig Ruhe habe!?
Today my day started very early: At 5:30 am my alarm clock went off and an hour later Praveen and I were in a taxi to the airport... he had arranged for me his friend Madhavan to come to work an hour earlier, he works at Ibex? Money Exchange at Chennai Airport. With a heavy heart I said goodbye to Praveen - he is the best friend you can imagine and I will miss him very much!
As I have already mentioned, getting cash is a complicated undertaking here in India... Best is to take a lot of cash with you (EUR, GBP, USD or CHF) and change with a commission of 2-3%, but the cheapest are bank transfers (for this you need an international IBAN number). Even if there are ATMs, you can withdraw only max. 10'000 rupees (CHF/EUR 150) and that with commissions of both banks (approx. 6% with EC/maestro, much more with a credit card!). Most fees are to be paid when paying by credit card... With Madhavan I was able to withdraw a larger amount with my EC card (5% commission + one-time fee of CHF 5 from my bank) - now I hope that I have some peace and quiet for the time being!?

Kaum war unsere Transaktion abgeschlossen, öffnete der Check-in Schalter meines Vistara Fluges nach Port Blair, Andamanen. Natürlich hatte ich wieder einmal Übergewicht obschon ich einen Koffer bei Praveens Familie gelassen hatte... gerne bezahlte ich aber die paar Rupien, nun hatte ich ja schliesslich Bargeld! ; )
Pünktlich um 8:40 Uhr hoben wir in Chennai ab. Der Flug über den Golf von Bengalen dauerte 1 1/2 Stunden und zur angekündeten Landezeit stand ich bereits draussen - trotz der Kontrolle der ausländischen Pässe wegen des Novel Corona Virus! Dort erwartete mich Manoj, mein privater Chauffeur auf Port Blair, mit einem Schild. Ich hatte ein Pauschalpaket für eine Woche bei Arun von Andaman LeisureTrip gebucht...
As soon as our transaction was completed, the check-in counter of my Vistara flight to Port Blair, Andaman, opened. Of course my suitcase was overweight once again, although I had left a suitcase with Praveen's family... but I was happy to pay the few rupees, now that I finally had cash! ; )
We took off in Chennai on time at 8:40 am. The flight over the Gulf of Bengal took 1 1/2 hours and at the announced landing time I was already outside - despite the control of the foreign passports due to the Novel Corona Virus! There Manoj, my private chauffeur on Port Blair, was awaiting me with a board. I had booked a package for a week with Arun from Andaman LeisureTrip...

Manoj fuhr mich die paar Kilometer zum aparten Ami Grace Hotel in der Stadt Port Blair, wo ich ein sehr geräumiges und hübsches Zimmer bezog. Bis mein Programm am Nachmittag weiterging, hoffte ich an meinem Blog weiterarbeiten zu können... daraus wird aber wahrscheinlich nichts auf den Andamanen, denn die Verbindung ist so schwach, dass ich nicht mal meine e-mails öffnen und in 3 Stunden gerade mal 5 whatsapps verschicken konnte! : (
Manoj drove me the few kilometers to the distinctive Ami Grace Hotel in the city of Port Blair, where I moved into an very spacious and pretty room. Until my programme continued in the afternoon, I hoped to be able to continue working on my blog... but it probably won't work on the Andaman Islands because the connection is so weak that I was not even able to open my e-mails and to send only 5 whatsapps in 3 hours! : (

Um 14:30 Uhr ging mein Programm weiter und Manoj fuhr mich zum Gefängnis Cellular Jail, das um 1900 für Freiheitskämpfer gegen die Briten erbaut wurde. Vielleicht ist der Fakt, dass die Andamanen eine Gefängnisinsel war, der Grund, dass die Einheimischen nicht so strahlen - oder hatte ich mich bereits an die extreme Herzlichkeit der Tamilen in Chennai gewohnt?
My programme continued at 2:30 pm and Manoj drove me to the prison Cellular Jail, built around 1900 for freedom fighters against the British. Maybe the fact that the Andaman Islands were a prison island is why the locals don't shine - or had I already got used to the extreme warmth of the Tamils in Chennai?

Eine Stunde später ging es zur Corbyn's Cove Beach, die sich als sehr kleiner Strand erwies... zudem war Baden verboten, da gerade gestern jemand ertrunken war. Es war nicht mehr ganz so heiss (Tag 35, Nacht 25 Grad) und zum Glück hatte ich mein Joggingzeug dabei, so erhielt ich endlich wieder mal Auslauf! : ) Mein verkürzter Museumsaufenthalt im Gefängnis bescherte mir zudem ein perfektes Timing hier: Eine religiöse Prozession (Pooja) startete gerade und ich konnte die gelb bemalten Einheimischen bestaunen, die mit langen Speeren herumlaufen, die durch ihre Wangen gebohrt waren... Was absolut ekelerregend ist bisher, ist der extrem viele Abfall überall!
An hour later we drove to Corbyn's Cove Beach, which turned out to be a very small beach... bathing was forbidden since someone drowned just yesterday. It was not that hot anymore (day 35, night 25 centigrade) and luckily I had brought my jogging gear with me, so I finally got some exercise! : ) My shortened stay in the prison museum gave me also a perfect timing here: A religious procession (pooja) was just starting and I was able to marvel at the yellow-painted locals, who walk around with long spears drilled through their cheeks... What is absolutely disgusting so far, is the extremely lot of waste everywhere!

einer herrlichen Dusche im sauberen Hotel Ami Grace (vor 2 Jahren eröffnet)
holte mich Manoj ab zum Abendprogramm: Light and Sound Show im Cellular Jail.
Ich bin weniger interessiert an Geschichte - sie zeigt mir nur wie dumm
Menschen waren und leider immer noch sind... Danach folgte aber der angenehme
Teil des Abends: Abendessen im bekannten Fischrestaurant New Light House. Ich
genoss leckere Tigerprawns mit Pommes und mariniertem, fritiertem Blumenkohl
während Arun des Andaman LeisureTrip mit seinem Freund Himanshu vorbeischauten
um mit mir mein Programm zu besprechen. : )

After a wonderful shower in
the clean Hotel Ami Grace (opened 2 years ago) Manoj picked me up for the
evening programme: Light and Sound Show in Cellular Jail. I'm mot really
interested in history - it just shows me how stupid humans were and
unfortunately still are... Then finally I proceeded to the pleasant part of the
evening: dinner at the well-known fish restaurant New Light House. I enjoyed
delicious tiger prawns with fries and marinated, fried cauliflower while Arun
of Andaman LeisureTrip stopped by with his friend Himanshu to discuss my
programme. : )
